The Experience

After having a repeat of this date at Zuppa, we headed off to the Cineplex at Shangri-La Plaza for the 6th Silent Film Festival. The car parking challenge and the sleep deprivation was all worth it.

It was far from your ordinary movie date. It's a time travel experience as the movie shown was La Casa De La Troya, a film from 1925. It was a comedy-romance, a real lengthy one! It features Gerardo, a law student living in a dormitory named La Troya. Gerardo fell in love with a Galician girl named Carmen. After around ten long chapters of pictures and words flashed on screen, they ended up marrying each other.

Yes, unlike movies of today where you just sit back and relax, you need to pay close attention to the screen to READ the dialogues. The laughs from really old people around (probably 80 years up) completes the nostalgic feel.

Enduring three hours in a theater seat would have not been possible without the great live musical scoring by Ignacio Plaza and Sinosikat. Mr. Plaza is a European who has been giving new life to these old films by providing fresher music. Local band Sinosikat added the jazz-funk-Pinoy touch to the film.

The chemistry between these great musicians is just amazing! They play, sing, and clap spontaneously on cue! We got amazed with their talent that there were points when we lost focus on watching (and reading) the film.

A movie-concert date is definitely a one of a kind experience! See you next year in the 7th Silent Film Festival at Shang Cineplex!
